About Visual Studies in the Art and Art History Department

Visual Studies (Studio Art) courses are housed in the Art and Art History Department in the Westphal College of Media Arts and Design. Visual Studies provides foundational coursework in Drawing and Design, as well as an array of upper-level electives in Sculpture, Painting, Printmaking, and Performance for most of the majors within Westphal. The Visual Studies program delivers studio curriculum for students majoring in 13 of Westphal's 19 design and media disciplines. Visual Studies courses establish a student's studio practice through foundation level courses and builds upon these core methods in upper-level studio classes.

The Visual Studies faculty are working artists who use their research, professional art practices and collaborative spirit to inform their pedagogy. Students are inspired to merge the creative independence of fine art with design, Faculty work closely with students and encourage collaboration across disciplines,

Job Summary

Design for Media Courses (VSST 107, 108, 109) are foundation level studio courses that introduce the visual language of two-dimensional design while using a hybrid approach of studio and digital processes. In these courses, students engage in a series of visual problems that combine studio media (including paint and mixed media) with digital media (pixel, vector, and motion-based software). Completing this integrated coursework allows students to gain an understanding of the elements and principals of design in relation to their media-based disciplines, equipping them with the basic skill sets to guide them into their majors. Instructors will work with students to develop their visual communication skills while fostering individual creative expression.

The Adjunct will employ a variety of strategies to foster student artistic development, learning and discussions, as well as encourage active learning in all students, maintain proper course-related records, and evaluate student work and provide students with feedback as to the progress toward meeting the objectives of the course. Each adjunct faculty member is responsible for effectively teaching students in the assigned classroom or determined remote setting. Each adjunct faculty member is responsible for effectively implementing the mission of the Department of Art and Art History within Drexel's Westphal College of Media Arts & Design. Responsibilities may include teaching days, evenings, nights, and weekends, with the potential for online only, in-person only, or a combination of both.

Essential Functions

  • Teach required number of credit hours per quarter based on contract.
  • Teach studio, lecture, and/or practicum courses per contract.
  • Plan and provide instructional experiences that reflect an understanding of the philosophy, objectives, and curriculum of the program.
  • Evaluate student achievement of curricular objectives/outcomes.
  • Maintain communication with the program director regarding any course or student issues.
  • Perform other similar duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of teaching or professional experience.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed.
