Job Summary
The Department of Sociology at Drexel University invites applications for a non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor with expertise in Urban Sociology for the 2022-2023 academic year. Those with additional teaching specialties in the fields of race & ethnicity, class, sex and gender, and medical sociology are especially encouraged to apply. Teaching duties include teaching Urban Sociology, Sex and the City, Housing and Homelessness, Sociology of Health and Illness, Introduction to Sociology, and other sociology undergraduate courses.
The successful applicant will begin in January 2023. The initial contract is for one year, with the possibility of reappointment for renewable 2- or 3-year contracts. The main duties will be twelve credit hours of teaching per ten-week term (or equivalent, as assigned by the Department Head), holding regularly scheduled office hours, and meeting with students outside of class. Other duties include service within the department such as participation in open houses and other events.
The Sociology Department is housed within the College of Arts and Sciences. The College offers a variety of B.A. and graduate degrees spanning the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. Faculty in the Sociology department also work with interdisciplinary programs including the Center for Science, Technology, and Society; the Women and Gender Studies Program; and the graduate program in Communication, Culture and Media.
Essential Functions
- Teaching 36 credits at undergraduate level over three quarters
- Service to the college and department
- Holding regularly scheduled office hours and meeting with students outside of class
- Service within the department such as participation in open houses and other events
Required Qualifications
- PhD or Doctorate in Sociology
- 1-3 years of teaching experience in higher education
- Excellence in teaching and teaching innovation and dedication to working with students is essential
- Successful applicants must demonstrate potential for teaching excellence in the environment of a major research university
- Strong written and oral communication skills are required
- The successful applicant must have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. by September 1, 2022, and must be legally eligible to work in the United States
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior teaching or lecturing experience is highly desirable
- Interest in course and curriculum development and online teaching experience desired
