Research Assistant I

Job Summary 

The research assistant will join a highly collaborative team, to be involved in NIH- and industry-funded projects that examine alcohol use, feeding, and obesity in both rats and mice. Under supervision, they will be responsible for basic handling of rodents, breeding, genotyping, feeding and watering of animals. Individuals will also prepare and inject experimental drugs, assist/conduct rodent surgeries, set up behavioral and neurochemical experiments, conduct blood ethanol assessments, conduct neurochemical assessments, update and maintain data spreadsheets, and maintain lab supplies and equipment. Procedures and techniques will be outlined in detail, with the employee exercising moderate discretion and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks.

Essential Functions 

  • Prepare and inject experimental drugs.
  • Maintain animal colony.
  • Genotyping.
  • Feed and water animals.
  • Organizing experimental data and spreadsheets.
  • Assess blood ethanol levels.
  • Assist in behavioral testing.
  • Assist / conduct rodent surgeries.
  • Assist in neurochemical testing.

Required Qualifications 

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Neuroscience, Biology or  Equivalent.
  • Minimum of a year of research experience.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Lab experience preferably in rodent behavior experimental procedures.

Physical Demands 

  • Typically sitting at a desk/table.
  • Typically standing, walking
  • Lifting demands<25lbs

Additional Information 

This position is classified as Non-Exempt with a grade of F, $ 14.10-$ 21.15. The offered pay is dependent upon internal equity and the successful candidate’s competencies, education, and experience.
