Strategic Design Fellow

Job Summary

The Strategic Design Fellowship provides Philadelphians ages 18-26 with opportunities to build skills in media and content design such as photography, creative writing, and podcasting, while learning about and exploring issues that they find meaningful related to the health and future of their neighborhoods and city. Fellows then apply their media-making skills to design content that brings awareness to these issues and identifies steps the city can take towards addressing them.

Strategic Design Fellows will work directly with Michael O’Bryan and Fellowship staff assisting with various components of the Fellowship’s projects, such as digital campaign design, content creation, discovery research, and other client-based work as needed.

The ideal candidate will have strong interest in photography and media creation, social marketing and campaign development techniques, and design research methodologies. The candidate will be detail oriented, a strong communicator, a self-starter, and interested in working on projects that use creative and design methods to amplify youth perspectives on issues related to Philadelphians ages 18-26.

The employment term will be for up to 12 months from the date of hire, with the opportunity to renew based on performance and project funding. Selected candidates are allowed to work remotely, with the expectation that periodic in-person meetings in Philadelphia, PA may be scheduled on an as-needed basis.

Essential Functions

  • Attend and fully participate in classes across the fellowship, including Photography and Visual Media, Narrative Design, Group Processing, Intro to Documentary Filmmaking.
  • Complete all assignments for classes.
  • Complete any client-based work that occurs during the fellowship, including: Event curation, social media campaign development, event photography campaign photography shoots and editing, design research activities.
  • Communicate if for any reason they are unable to attend a class or complete an assignment.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to be detail oriented and a self-starter.
  • Strong communication skills to synthesize complex research into digestible findings.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience with photography and media creation, social marketing and/or campaign development techniques.
  • Knowledge of design research methodologies.
  • Ability to be a creative thinker and problem-solver.

Additional Information

This is a Part-time Per Diem position classified as Non-exempt. The offered pay is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
