Job Summary

The Fire and Emergency Services Specialist is responsible for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of fire and safety hazards. It is his/her responsibility, under direction, to work with Drexel stakeholders to minimize fire and safety risks and to manage compliance with applicable University policies and fire code requirements. Be able to apply the five tenets of emergency management (prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery) to fulfill the mission of the Department of Public Safety.

Essential Functions

  • Ability to work within a team setting to promote comprehensive fire safety and emergency preparedness programs.
  • Work with internal/external departments to correct fire safety hazards and develop risk reduction measures.
  • Assist with delivering training classes and outreach materials.
  • In the absence of the Director or Assistant Directors act as a representative to other departments, acting as a technical advisor on fire safety and emergency preparedness issues.
  • Write reports documenting observations, and recommendations for Director’s review. Assist with writing reports to other departments.
  • Document all work in office computer files and databases.
  • Serve as a member of the Incident Response Team (IRT) and/or staff/manage the Emergency Operations Center.
  • Be able to work flexible hours as the needs of the Unit require and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency management or related field or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • 3-4 years of emergency preparedness, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Valid driver’s license from the state of residence
  • ICS/NIMS (100, 200, 700, 800)
  • Possesses knowledge of basic theories, concepts, practices, and procedures in emergency management.  Applies the knowledge to work assignments to meet specific department goals and objectives.
  • Under supervision of the Assistant Director or the Director performs assigned tasks using standard procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Emergency Management or related field.
  • PA EMT or NREMT, ICS (300, 400), HSEEP. 
  • General knowledge of local, state, and national fire codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of organizational and personnel management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to use computer database and spreadsheet programs.
  • Ability to research and use appropriate technical resources.
  • Developed professional presentation skills.

Additional Information

This position is classified as exempt, grade J. Compensation for this grade ranges from $47,490 - $71,230.  Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
