Laboratory and Field Technician

Job Summary 

The Munshi-South Lab at Drexel University is seeking applications for a field and laboratory technician. The lab is engaged with a variety of projects focused on genomics of wild populations, particularly in urban environments. The technician will work closely with Dr. Munshi-South on a new project on urban evolution of lichens that will involve both field sampling and laboratory work. The technician will also contribute to management of the lab, such as ordering supplies, managing sample collections, and working with vendors. This position may also provide opportunities to participate manuscript writing, data analysis, and outreach/education activities. This a one-year position with continuation after the first year based on availability of funds and performance.

Essential Functions 

  • Field and laboratory activities relating to population genomics of urban lichens including, but not limited to, sampling wild lichens and other organisms, extracting DNA from samples, and contributing to DNA library preparation.
  • Contribute to organization, coordination, and execution of a field sampling and data collection program for lichens. 
  • Occasional travel for sampling and data collection. 
  • Curation of data and documentation of research activities and analysis. 
  • General lab activities related to the project, including, but not limited to, ordering supplies, cleaning equipment, organizing waste disposal, recording activities in paper and electronic notebooks, and mentoring undergraduates. 

Other Duties

  • Maintenance of sampling and data collection equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinate sampling trips with collaborating institutions.
  • Assist with writing and communicating through presentations and publications.
  • Assist with outreach and education activities

Required Qualifications 

  • Minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Biology or a related discipline.

Additional Information 

This position is classified as nonexempt grade F. Compensation for this grade ranges from  $ 14.10 to $21.15 per hour. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
