Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Payroll Operations is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Payroll Department and managing the Payroll Accountants. This position is responsible for coordinating all work associated with the accurate and timely processing of the payrolls. The Assistant Director of Payroll Operations must be knowledgeable in payroll subject matter such as wage and hour regulations, payroll tax withholding, and payroll system calculations. The Assistant Director will use their knowledge and experience to resolve complex payroll issues and provide excellent customer service to the university community.

Essential Functions

  • Provides supervisory oversight to the Payroll Accountants and Senior Payroll Accountants. Supervisory responsibilities include directing, teaching, training and use of competency, productivity and performance, standards, selection of candidates, making recommendations, performance management, and reviewing performance for Payroll staff.
  • Oversee the processing of the monthly, biweekly, weekly and off-cycle payrolls. Ensure that all payroll, direct deposit, and bank deadlines are met. Process payroll voids and adjustments as needed.
  • Supervise the set-up and maintain payroll records in the payroll system to ensure accurate processing of earnings, withholding and other deductions to deliver error-free net pay to employees.
  • Work with employees and departments to resolve complex payroll issues. Act as departmental liaison to internal and external auditors.
  • Oversee the escheatment process for payroll payments ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
  • Clearly communicate changes to procedures or regulatory changes affecting pay to managers and employees to ensure understanding of impact.
  • Process payments and disburse payroll withholdings to appropriate vendors and governmental agencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or Accounting or Finance or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Managerial experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of payroll procedures, processes and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service and problem resolutions skills.
  • Experience using payroll software (Banner HR, OAS Reporting, Hyperion Reporting, ADP).
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP).

This position is classified as exempt, grade M. Compensation for this grade ranges from $75,200 to $112,790 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
