Job Summary

The Radiation Safety Technologist is responsible for conducting radiation safety surveys and audits of research laboratories and clinical facilities where sources of ionizing radiation are used and supporting the radiation monitoring program. Duties may be assigned at Drexel University, Drexel University College of Medicine and/or Tenet Healthcare facilities in any combination at the discretion of the Director.

Essential Functions

  • The Radiation Safety Technologist is responsible for conducting radiation safety surveys and audits of research laboratories and clinical facilities where sources of ionizing radiation are used and supporting the radiation monitoring program. Duties may be assigned at Drexel University, Drexel University College of Medicine and/or Tenet Healthcare facilities in any combination at the discretion of the Director.
  • Audit documentation on patients administered radioactive materials. Maintain equipment inventory of radiation producing machines, nuclear medicine cameras and radiation detection equipment. Conduct physical inventory of sealed sources. Leak test sealed sources as required by regulations. Survey nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology, radiation oncology, clinical and research laboratories using radioactive materials. Audit nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology, radiation oncology and research laboratories for regulatory compliance. Review requests to purchase radioactive material for proper authorization. Inspect radioactive packages upon receipt and distribute packages to appropriate laboratory.
  • Monitor radioactive material releases in effluent and perform bioassays. Collect and store radioactive waste from generators, prepare waste for disposal, remove waste disposed by decay-in­ storage. Conduct training sessions for hospital and university personnel. Respond to emergencies. Prepare written reports.
  • Maintain records in established recordkeeping system. Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or director.

Required Qualifications

  • Associates Degree
  • 7 years of relevant experience
  • The Radiation Safety Technologist must be knowledgeable in the use of a variety of radiation detection equipment that Includes hand held survey meters and analytical equipment. The incumbent must have or quickly develop a working knowledge of radiation protection regulations, standards and practices at academic/medical facilities. The Radiation Safety Technologist must be proficient in the use of personal computers (Word, Excel) and must be capable of accurate data entry. The ability to effectively communicate with persons of various backgrounds Is necessary; therefore, good written and oral skills are required. The Incumbent will need to be able to work independently with general direction and minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification in nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, or radiography technology will be considered in substitution for the degree requirement.

This is a part-time temporary casual position classified as non-exempt.  The pay offered is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
