Job Summary

Under direction of the Director, the Assistant Director of Transportation Services manages the daily operation of the University transportation system.  This provides 16 hours per day, seven days a week of services to three university campuses.  This campus bus services includes three fixed routes, bus charters, event services, and disability services support. This position also manages University City campus events preparation and breakdown of equipment; approximately 1,500 departmental and student events each year. Responsible for the daily scheduling and completion of work requests for the various departments along with work order assigned to in house and capital projects.  Serves the role of Director in his absence.  Responsible for the assigning of duties and work schedules for all assigned unionized employees.  This includes the shipping and receiving, mail services, auto mechanic, utilities and recycling operations.

Essential Functions

  • Transportation - Manages and supervise campus transportation services for all three campuses. Implements US Department of Transportation safety regulation for twenty-nine (29) Commercial drivers, 19 commercial buses, and 16 hours of fixed route bus service daily. Schedules drivers and vehicles for an average of 400 bus charters an year.
  • Work Orders - Manages the work order requests for transportation services throughout the campus. Oversee the completion of over 1,000 work order requests annually on the University City campus . This includes equipment moves and transporting office furniture and supplies. Supervise bulk material moves for construction projects.
  • Events - Assist the Events Services Office and the Office of Protocol by supplying labor and materials in a timely manner for University City campus events. Supports and supplies documentation of the services provided for timely submitting of invoices and chargebacks.
  • Shipping & Receiving and Mail Services - Manages and accounts for the delivery of all University mail, packages, and bulk materials which requires immediate delivery by the unionized workforce. Oversee the system for tracking deliveries from Fed EX, UPS, and other carriers.
  • Equipment and Materials - Schedules and assigns employees on site to repair equipment and materials for daily operation of custodial and grounds equipment. Is held accountable for the quick repair of all service vehicles assigned to maintenance and mechanical services employees.
  • Fleet Maintenance - Ensure that commercial vehicles are maintained within the Federal and state DOT regulations, which includes Facilities Management vehicle fleet and maintenance & grounds department equipment. This includes supervising (4) class A auto mechanics.
  • Administrative & Budget Duties - Excellent oral and written communication skills with regards to dealing with students, faculty, administrators, and vendors. Daily responsibility includes payroll for Union employees, employees attendance documentation, and issuing discipline to Union employees. Prepares budget and expense recovery reports and transportation statistics.
  • Manager on Duty - Participate in on call manager rotation. Handle any emergency or unscheduled transportation issues to ensure continuity of service.
  • Safety - Assures compliance with regulations and guidelines. Monitors safety procedures that are in place to reduce the possibility of on the job injuries and accidents. Holds monthly employee meetings to discuss issues with daily assignments and operational issues.

Additional Information

This position is classified as exempt, grade K. Compensation for this grade ranges from $54,630 - $81,940 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
