Job Summary

Students will join an NSF-funded project focused on the genetics of urban evolution. Students will participate in field and laboratory research that challenges them to think critically about evolutionary biology and genomics and will work closely with the Phifer-Rixey Lab to define an independent research project. Research will be conducted at Drexel University in Philadelphia and sites in and around Philadelphia, with opportunities for additional fieldwork in the region. 

Participants will gain hands-on experience in all parts of the scientific process. In addition to research, students will engage in professional development including how to create and present a scientific poster and apply to graduate school as well as outreach activities.  The program is open to both local and national applicants. We strongly encourage applications from students from small colleges, community colleges, or 2-year programs whose research opportunities have been limited.

Participants will receive a $5150 stipend for the 8-week program. In addition, participants will be provided with either on-campus housing for the duration of the program or a housing stipend to defray costs of local housing. If you need on-campus housing, please indicate that on your application.

Up to $500 in travel expenses will be reimbursed for candidates outside of the Philadelphia area.

Essential Functions

  • Field and laboratory activities relating to evolutionary genetics including, but not limited to, sampling, collecting trait data, and extracting nucleic acids from samples.
  • Data analysis
  • Presentation of data and analysis via oral and written communication
  • Curation of data and documentation of all research activities and analysis.
  • Maintenance of laboratory and field supplies.
  • Assist with outreach and education activities.
  • Professional development relevant to the project and the student’s desired career path
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High School or GED
  • Must be majoring in Biology or a closely related field
  • At least one year completed of a 2- or 4-year UG program
  • Must be continuing in an undergraduate program in the fall of 2024. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; High motivation for a career in scientific research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of commitment to academic success

This is a full-time temporary position classified as non-exempt.  The pay offered is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
