Job Summary

The Director of Development, College of Arts and Sciences is responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive development program, specifically for their assigned College. The program incorporates leadership annual gift, major gift, and planned gift fundraising. The Director reports to the Assistant Vice President of Development for the Arts & Science Unit within the Office of Institutional Advancement (IA). They will work closely with the Dean and colleagues from across IA and the College of Arts & Sciences.

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. This is a hybrid role with expectation to work on-campus 2-3 times a week.

Essential Functions

  • Plans, organizes and directs program to secure major gifts by pursuing the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of private support from individuals and other constituencies for the benefit of the College of Arts and Sciences. 
  • Serves as the primary fundraiser for the College, as such, builds and manages a pool of prospects capable of making major gift commitments of $50,000+.
  • Develops detailed strategies and goals on a monthly basis for the top prospects within the portfolio.
  • Maintains an active schedule of a combination of in-person and virtual meetings with leadership and major gift suspects and prospects, including alumni, parents, friends and other constituencies.
  • Assists with the qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of principal gifts prospects and donors in association with the Assistant Vice President of Development, Arts & Science Unit. 
  • Serves as advisor and partner to the Dean of the College on fundraising matters; is a member of the Dean’s leadership team. 
  • Manages the College’s Dean’s Advisory Board, which is comprised of a diverse group of individuals representing the programs within the College and secures the membership’s annual gift commitment.
  • Coordinates development activities for the College with other teams in the Office of Institutional Advancement, including Alumni Relations and Marketing & Communications, among others.
  • Stewards donors through ongoing communications, recognition activities, invitations to key events, and interaction with beneficiaries of their support.
  • Coordinates such activities with the central IA Donor Relations function as needed.
  • Builds relationships with Department Heads and academic Program Directors and has knowledge of priorities for the success of departments within the College; shares information about fundraising activities and partnering with those leaders to advance their priorities when appropriate.
  • Serve as a key liaison for the College with the Senior Associate Vice President of Planned Giving, paying special attention to opportunities to secure new planned gifts and steward members of the Drexel University Legacy Society.
  • Attends internal and external planned giving seminars as appropriate.
  • Promotes University priorities and image to constituents; Serves as front line staff to promote campus goals and objectives.
  • Maintain current knowledge of university-wide institutional priorities.
  • Cultivates and solicits prospects on behalf of other campus units as appropriate, and in consultation with senior staff.
  • Adheres to performance goals and standards for Directors of Development as specified under Office of Institutional Advancement guidelines.
  • Follows IA procedures with regard to prospect management and documenting contacts.
  • Responsible for oversight and submission of all relative fundraising reports, statistics, projections, and publications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated success in a development program or B2C sales-oriented role.
  • Proven track record of cultivating, soliciting, and closing gifts of $50,000+ and/or track record of meeting quarterly sales goals. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically frequently.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent administrative skills.
  • Valid Driver's License and willingness to drive extensively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher education and/or nonprofit experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work in highly collaborative teams but also be a self-starter.
  • Previous experience working with senior-level executives.
  • Knowledge of prospect management systems.
  • Expertise in the fields of liberal arts and sciences.
  • Knowledge of database fundraising software CS Advance.

This position is classified as Exempt, grade N. Compensation for this grade ranges from $90,430 - $135,640 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
