Job Summary

The Instrumentation Specialist will working within the Department of Chemistry labs. The Specialist will conduct instrument repair and calibration, instrumentation related training or meetings, and instrument computer support.

Below is the list of instruments used in different labs at Drexel. Candidates do not need to have experience with every one:

Spectroscopy Instruments

  • Atomic spectroscopy: Atomic absorption spectrometer with graphite furnace
  • Infrared spectroscopy: Multiple FTIR spectrometers, FTIR microscope, ATR accessories
  • UV-Vis spectroscopy: Standard UV/Vis spectrometers, NanoDrop UV/Vis, Ocean Optics USB spectrometers, UV/Vis-NIR system
  • Fluorescence spectroscopy: Fluorescence spectrometers, fluorescence polarization and lifetime spectrometers
  • Circular dichroism spectrometer
  • Raman microscope (Renishaw Invia)
  • NMR spectrometer (90 MHz FT-NMR)

Chromatography & Separation Systems

  • Gas chromatography (GC) and GC-MS systems
  • High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and UHPLC/UPLC systems
  • Quaternary and binary gradient HPLC systems
  • Capillary electrophoresis system

Mass Spectrometry Platforms

  • Triple-quadrupole MS systems
  • Single quadrupole MS
  • Quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF) MS
  • Orbitrap MS system
  • MALDI-TOF and MALDI-TOF/TOF systems

Particle & Molecular Characterization

  • Laser diffraction particle size analyzer
  • Dynamic light scattering spectrometer

Imaging & Microscopy

  • Optical microscopes
  • FTIR microscope
  • Raman microscope
  • Gel imaging system

Electrochemical & Electronics Systems

  • BAS electrochemical system
  • Computer-interfaced electronics workstation (NI ELVIS II/III, Quanser analog electronics lab suite)

Additional Laboratory Equipment

  • Microwave synthesizer (for chemical synthesis)

Essential Functions

  • Perform routine maintenance and periodic calibration
  • Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs in collaboration with manufacturer or third-party service personnel
  • Arrange for instrument service when required
  • Train users (students, faculty, staff, etc.) in the proper use of the instruments
  • Serve as analytical instrument resource for research project needs
  • Maintain information about instrumentation on the department's website
  • Maintain hardware and software upgrades for instrumentation.
  • Maintain a supply of consumables, supplies, and gases for instruments
  • Maintain computers interfaced with the department instrumentation
  • Maintain a clean & safe working environment in the various instrument facilities
  • Assist other department Electronics Instrument Specialists in the MS or NMR facility when required
  • Run high-resolution MS samples for faculty and/or their students
  • Perform administrative tasks including answering emails, ordering specialized parts as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with instrument maintenance and/or operation
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work productively with individuals of varying backgrounds and levels of expertise

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related degree
  • 5 years of experience with chemical instrumentation, particularly for those with only a Bachelor's degree

Additional Information
This position is classified as Exempt, grade L. Compensation for this grade ranges from $62,630 - $93,950 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
