Job Summary

The mission of the Office of Housing and Residence Life is to create engaged communities that facilitate learning for all residential students. Area Coordinators in conjunction with the other Residential Living staff members ensure that we accomplish this mission within each of our residence halls. Through community development, supervision, and building management, Area Coordinators create environments where education and development occur for every residential student. 

The Area Coordinator position is a full-time, live-in, 12-month position. Area Coordinators are responsible for overseeing a cluster of residential buildings dependent upon the needs of the department. For each building overseen, Area Coordinators supervise 6 – 15 Resident Assistants and 2 – 4 Residential Desk Coordinators, who are professional staff members who work at our residence hall front desks. Both the RA and RDC staff are unionized employees. Area Coordinators are responsible for building communities within the residence halls that are centered within the mission of Residence Life.

On the Housing and Residence Life team, Area Coordinators utilize experiences within their residence halls to shape and influence departmental projects and decisions. Resident Directors will be asked to serve on various committees, as liaisons to Student Life offices, and as members of work groups and project groups, throughout the year.

In addition, Area Coordinators serve in an on-call duty rotation to respond to student emergencies and assure the health and safety of the Drexel residential community.

Essential Functions

  • Crisis Response:
    • Participate in an on-call duty rotation throughout the calendar year, 24hrs/day from 9am – 9am.
    • Answer the Department-issued cellphone and respond to incidents as required.
    • While on duty, direct Resident Assistant staff to initiate and complete the necessary paperwork and incident reports according to training guidelines.
    • Coordinate a fair and equitable system of On-Call coverage.
    • Stay in proximity to campus while working an on duty assignment.
  • Community Development
    • Manage the construction of a strong and healthy community within the residence halls.
    • Utilize community to promote student learning.
    • Actively model behaviors and mentor students in the values of community.
    • Create and implement a community development plan for the hall/area.
    • Assist staff with development and implementation of community development plan for their floor/area.
    • Serve as primary supervisor for staff and mentor for all residents.
    • Be present at floor and building-wide events throughout the year.
    • Promote belonging and inclusion within your residential population.
    • Create and implement systems to assess the residential experience in hall/area, including the administration of the Skyfactor survey as directed.
  • Supervision
    • Develop and articulate a clear vision for the residential area that aligns with departmental priorities.
    • Hold weekly staff meetings with Resident Assistant staff to accomplish business, staff growth, learning, and to promote the development of the staff team.
    • Ensure the smooth and effective operation of front desk.
    • Conduct bi-weekly, half hour one-on-one meetings with each student and professional staff member.
    • Supervise student staff to assure growth in the areas outlined in the Resident Assistant job description.
    • Complete annual evaluations for student staff and annual evaluations for professional staff.
  • Building Management
    • Manage, implement, and assess the administrative elements of the residence halls, including the supervision of unionized professional desk staff, collaboration with unionized management (both custodial and facilities staff), budgets, interdepartmental collaboration and services, and administrative responsibilities.
    • Regularly walk the assigned residential hall/area to ensure effective management of the residential facility.
    • Maintain a functional and effective mail and package system in the building.
    • Provide oversight for keys and occupancy documentation.
    • Prioritize the safety and customer service in the buildings.
    • Manage Opening, Term Switch, Closing, Room Change Days, etc.
    • Oversee budget and maintain quarterly reports.
    • Manage and troubleshoot building operations; work with Public Safety, Custodial staff, and Facilities in a professional manner.
    • Collaborate with Occupancy Management and Conference Services and University Housing Operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience.
  • Experience working on an on-call rotation.
  • Experience managing a student staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree.
  • Supervisory experience.

This position is classified as Exempt, grade J. Compensation for this grade ranges from $47,490 to $71,230 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
