The Academy of Natural Sciences was founded in 1812 for "the encouragement and cultivation of the sciences".  Since then, it has sponsored global expeditions, conducted pioneering environmental and systematics research, and amassed remarkable collections containing more than 18 million specimens from around the world and a peerless library and archive. Since 2011 its academic enterprise has been further strengthened through its affiliation with nearby Drexel University – a leading private non-profit research institution that focusses on innovation and entrepreneurship and provides a unique cooperative education program for its undergraduate and graduate degree students.

Job Summary

The Academy of Natural Sciences seeks an Early Childhood Educator to join its Education, Learning, and Development team which is part of the Community Learning Division.

This position will help implement the Academy's early childhood programs. The educator will assist in providing professional development workshops, mentoring and coaching for early childhood centers, for home-based providers, and in informal settings outside of school time hours, throughout Philadelphia. Program staff will also teach children of all ages.

Essential Functions

  • Assist in providing training, mentoring and support for home-based early childhood providers to enhance quality in all areas of early childhood development including an emphasis on literacy and language, math and science. 
  • Work as member of team, collaborating with other staff in preparing training activities based on the Science and Literacy for Success model. 
  • Help home-based early childhood providers implement science content. 
  • Assist with all grant-funded programming. 
  • Understanding of developmentally appropriate practice in early childhood education and the ability to support its use in early childhood centers. -
  • Assume other responsibilities at the request of the Manager of Early Childhood Education. 
  • Other duties as assigned, including assisting other education projects when necessary. 
  • Mentor other staff as appropriate. 

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. 
  • Minimum of 1 to 3 years of teaching in early childhood learning setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices, child behavior practices, and early childhood education gained through experience in early childhood field.
  • Ability to prepare, present, and facilitate meaningful educational activities for children.
  • Ability to prepare, present, and facilitate meaningful educational activities for adult learners.
  • Tact in providing technical assistance, coaching, mentoring and guidance.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to represent the Academy of Natural Sciences to the outside world in a professional manner.
  • Must be sensitive to various cultural and socioeconomic groups.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required.
  • Must pass all child abuse clearance and criminal background checks.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and successfully pass a motor vehicle records (MVR) check.
  • Must be available weekday mornings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Child Development Associates (CDA) credential preferred

Additional Information 

This position is classified as a Part time Exempt. Please note the salary range for a full-time position in this grade is I $41,120.00 - $61,680.00 The offered salary is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
