Job Summary

This position will work alongside the Senior Lab Manager for the School of Biomedical Engineering in providing advanced technical, operational, and safety leadership, as well as full undergraduate and common research laboratory support for the School of Biomedical Engineering. This position will function as a liaison between the department and school to employ the full technical skills available in the college to all departments. Laboratory Manager II coordinates cross-departmental laboratory support and collaborates with faculty and senior administration to enhance laboratory capabilities, efficiency, and research outcomes.

Essential Functions

  • Collaborate closely with the Senior Lab Manager to provide informed, written recommendations that enhance processes, experimental design, procedures, and equipment, with the goal of minimizing hazard potential.
  • Performs evaluations and assessments of fume hoods to support a safe and compliant laboratory environment. 
  • Supports the Senior Lab Manager in the development and delivery of a variety of safety training programs for faculty, staff, and students across the school. 
  • Assists the Senior Lab Manager with follow-up investigations and reporting of laboratory safety events (incidents and near misses), contributing to root-cause analysis and corrective action planning. 
  • Coordinates and administers laboratory training and orientation, ensuring full adherence to safety standards and procedural protocols. 
  • Assists in establishing laboratory procedures, maintaining comprehensive lab-related documentation, and supporting the organization of associated databases.
  • Ensures all faculty, staff, and students comply with laboratory rules, regulations, and health and safety policies; provides training and guidance to uphold the highest standards of practice.
  • Maintains high-quality, well-organized laboratories by overseeing inventory, coordinating maintenance needs, and ensuring timely inspection, cleaning, calibration, testing, and repair of lab equipment.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact with vendors for maintenance services within assigned departments.
  • Oversees custodial support to ensure laboratories remain clean and operational; initiates and monitors work orders for laboratory facility repairs and modifications in both assigned departments. •
  • Provides clear guidance and support to staff and students in the use of laboratory equipment and procedures.
  • Anticipates potential issues and assists in resolving problems to ensure programs stay on schedule for both assigned departments. 
  • Partners with the Senior Lab Manager to coordinate with external experts whose specialized knowledge supports laboratory operations or improvements. 
  • Participates regularly in scheduled meetings with college Lab Managers to address broader technical needs and coordinate support for large-scale departmental initiatives.
  • Maintains and updates a central departmental space inventory within the shared database system.
  • Completes and passes the annual safety test as required by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. 
  • Supports researchers by assisting with laboratory purchases and the implementation of laboratory infrastructure needs.
  • Conducts laboratory tours for visiting parents and prospective students.
  • Maintains cross-training readiness to support other college laboratories as assigned by the Director of Lab Managers; keeps an up-to-date SOP manual accessible for use by other Lab Managers.
  • Engages ongoing professional development or continuing education to maintain and enhance skills.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned. Department Essential Functions Safety and Compliance
  • Provides consultation and support to ensure health and safety, and regulatory compliance in research and teaching laboratories throughout the school.
  • Conducts follow-up and completes formal reporting for Lab Safety Events, including incidents and near misses.
  • Works with the Senior Lab Manager to develop, maintain, and update the School’s Hygiene Plan, as well as laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Supports the maintenance of laboratory benches and work areas in accordance with University Health & Safety policies and procedures.
    • Support and Maintenance:
      • Supports the School’s lab supply and chemical inventory systems, fume hood programs, and proper disposal and management of hazardous chemicals.
  • Assists faculty, staff, and students with hazard identification and mitigation strategies, ensuring compliance with all safety requirements.
  • Conducts preventative maintenance on equipment used in academic classes and organizes equipment manuals for current and new shared resources.
  • Trains students in proper chemical storage locations and precautionary handling practices for hazardous chemicals.
  • Schedules and procures materials required for the school’s preventative maintenance efforts.
  • Manages Google Calendars for all shared BIOMED equipment to ensure effective scheduling and utilization.
  • Sets up, cleans up, and maintains running inventories of supplies for teaching laboratory sections.
  • Oversee the BIORAFT system, including onboarding new students and visiting researchers and ensuring completion of required training modules.
  • Supports the Senior Lab Manager in the development and delivery of laboratory safety training sessions.
  • Assists the Senior Lab Manager in purchasing, reconciling, and reporting of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Completes tasks as assigned by the Department of Head, faculty, or Director for the assigned departments. 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Master's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical, Biology, or Chemical Engineering or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Vast knowledge of the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Administration regulations and guidelines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment, provide timely and prompt turnaround for projects and tasks, use excellent judgment when problem solving and bring innovative solutions.
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • High degree of professionalism, initiative, integrity, adaptability, urgency, task, and motivation.
  • Capable lifting 50lbs.

Additional Information
This position is classified as Exempt, grade K. Compensation for this grade ranges from $54,630.00 - $81,940.00 yearly. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
