Job Summary

DNI and the laboratory of Professor Yury Gogotsi at Drexel University have an opening for a full-time laboratory technician with excellent organizational skills. The successful candidate will be working with our researchers to keep our 7,000 sq. ft. lab safe and operational. We use powder metallurgy techniques to prepare ceramic precursors and wet chemistry to synthesize MXenes. This position requires knowledge of chemicals and materials. Applicants with experience working in a chemistry or materials science laboratory in industry or academia are encouraged to apply.


This position equally involves maintaining our chemical inventory, ordering chemicals, maintaining equipment, shipping materials to our partners, and overseeing chemical safety and hygiene in the laboratory. Thus, the ideal candidate should have strong organizational and communication skills, as well as a keen understanding of chemistry and chemical safety.


Our laboratory hosts more than 30 students, post-docs, and visiting researchers. DNI is involved in collaborations in the US and around the world and has an excellent track record of funding. Essential Functions

  • Perform lab maintenance duties, which include ordering and stocking lab supplies, preparing shipments, and overseeing the general safety of the laboratory. 
  • Administer shipping labels and paperwork for all shipments globally.
  • Manage chemical inventory for safety and ordering.
  • Maintain laboratory and laboratory equipment. Coordinate cleanings, repairs, calibrations, etc. of all equipment within the lab, Drexel, and external vendors. 
  • Act as the point of contact for all internal departments (EHS, Facilities, etc.) and external vendors for the lab. 
  • Set standards for safety and responsibility for lab use. 
  • Participate in group meetings and engage in various laboratory activities. 
  • Present protocols, safety issues, and equipment usage to the group. 
  • Coordinate all facility use external to our lab, such as MCC at Drexel, and Singh Center labs at Penn. 
  • Manage personnel in the lab. Onboard new members and coordinate with mentors, and perform offboarding assistance for departing members (pertaining to physical lab presence). 
  • Administer the transfer of all research data for lab members upon departure. 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, materials science, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience (the salary will be commensurate with experience).
  • Foundational knowledge of chemicals, chemistry, and chemical safety and hygiene.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong work habits, ability to work with minimal supervision, be organized, and meet short- and long-term deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree.
  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment maintenance. 
  • Advanced knowledge of chemicals.

Additional Information
This position is classified as Exempt, grade K. Compensation for this grade ranges from $54,630.00 - $81,940.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
