About the English Language Center

The English Language Center’s (ELC’s) Intensive English Program and International Gateway Program are accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation. In addition, the ELC is a member of the University and College English Language Programs Consortium (UCIEP) and EnglishUSA.

Job Summary

Adjunct instructors are needed to teach in our special programs. Teaching loads vary from 2-15 hours per week for 2-6 weeks. Academic courses for nonnative speakers of English include but are not limited to: research and writing, technology and digital literacy, cultural immersion sessions with a sociopolitical theme, content-based English, and introduction to university culture. These daytime courses will be taught face-to-face at the University City campus, Monday through Friday.

Essential Functions

  1. Reviewing the course syllabus and updating with section information according to ELC/University course guidelines;
  2. Teaching the course as scheduled;
  3. Scheduling and holding at least one office hour per week;
  4. Being available to students and responding to students’ email inquiries within 24 hours;
  5. Maintaining accurate documentation of course records to justify the grades submitted;
  6. Submitting student grades in accordance with ELC and University policy;
  7. Attending course planning meetings, program welcome events, and final events;
  8. Participating in testing activities related to course assessments;
  9. Accepting observers into your classroom as scheduled;
  10. Providing students with a final progress report;
  11. Completing and returning student assessments in a timely manner;
  12. Any other duties directly related to the course as assigned by the ELC Director.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • At least 2 years of experience in higher education or working with college-age students;
  • Ability to teach academic preparation courses;
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced academic environment;
  • A superior level of English proficiency;
  • Ability to learn and use classroom technology, including learning management systems;

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in ESL/EFL, TESOL, TESL, TEFL, or Applied Linguistics;
  • Experience living and/or working abroad.
