Job Summary
The Systems and Cloud Administrator position at the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) provides high level technological support to staff and visitors, server/cloud administration and assists the Sr. Director with all technology initiatives.
This position is responsible for securely and stably maintaining the Academy’s server and cloud infrastructure, recommending and implementing new technologies and leveraging AWS and Drexel (including Azure) resources to ensure responsible spending, data availability and appropriate standards.
This position holds responsibility for the Academy’s staff support operation, including supervisory responsibility for the Technician Analyst II position, as well as providing expertise and guidance in the setup of systems and a wide variety of hardware and software services to support staff, faculty, students, administrators, and researchers.
This position coordinates ANS IT initiatives with DU IT, manages ANS's sub-tree in Active Directory (often through ScriptRunner and is responsible for the integration of Drexel’s Enterprise Application and Security initiatives.
This position must have the ability to provide leadership, act as part of a team, and critically think through projects and issues, considering the implications of choices and effectively seeing an assignment through to its timely end including appropriate documentation and communication. This is a primarily in-person position during normal business hours. However, opportunities for remote work, when appropriate, will be supported and special projects and emergencies may require being on-call, working in a high noise work environment,
Essential Functions
- On-site Server Administration
- Provide Linux and Windows server administration, installation, configuration, maintenance, backup and planning.
- Support to Research Developers on the implementation of databases, web and other related services
- Responsible for the configuration and management of the Academy’s Print Server o Repairing/troubleshooting networked printers and management of group printer maintenance contracts.
- Physical server hardware lifecycle
- SAN Environment and Fiber Network management and configuration
- Cloud Environment Management and Configuration
- Management of S3 backup infrastructure
- Management of other AWS resources as well as identifying, recommending and migrating (where appropriate) on site resources to AWS (or Azure if using DU infrastructure), Including LightSail, Transcription and SMB via Storage Gateways.
- Backup (currently AWS S3) configuration and management
- Configure, automate and verify backups of all ANS hosted data to assigned specifications.
- Monitor and confirm Drexel's yearly backup of ANS data
- Regularly improve and optimize backup strategy and implementation
- Drexel Enterprise Application Integration and Management
- Support staff in the use of Enterprise applications like O365 and Adobe Suite
- Identify and support DU Enterprise applications that would nicely support ANS needs and initiatives.
- Manage a small team of professional staff.
- Provide AD User, Computer, Group and Group Policy management
- Updating Active Directory configuration, group policy and user/directory rights management for the approximately 200 accounts
- Managing rights for large data amounts across several servers with different configurations.
- Drexel Networking Liaison
- Tracking ANS assets
- Coordinating the Academy’s DHCP and DNS entries with IRT.
- Assist in the troubleshooting of network issues such as outages
- Coordinating with DU IRT and firewall requirements
- Support for infrastructure and lab technology implementation.
- Strategic planning of assigned technology
- Responsible for the exploration of new technology via testing on a self-designed test environment to determine how new and unexplored OS features can benefit the Academy’s network
- Co-manage Drexel's Drexel Computer Recycling (DCR) program
- Identify collaboration opportunities across the various Drexel technology groups.
- Support on-call schedule and response to priority incidents as needed
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in computer or computer related field or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
- Minimum of 5 years managing a workstation support operation, managing servers and cloud resources and enterprise support, systems management, print and access control applications.
- Extensive knowledge of Windows, Linux, MAC Servers/Workstation operating systems
- Experience with S3 and CloudShell
- Excellent organizational skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to solve problems and make decisions.
- Ability to act quickly, decisively and calmly in a crisis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of Enterprise Applications and Support Systems
- Experience using EC2, Storage Gateways and Transcription
- Knowledge of similar and additional Azure cloud offerings.
- PowerShell and other (e.g. Python) scripting.
- Familiarity with Configuration Manager (Software Center), and JAMF
- Experience working in a university or museum, or familiarity with natural history and/or scientific research subjects.

Additional Information
This position is classified as Exempt, grade L. Compensation for this grade ranges from $62,630.00 - $93,950.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
