Job Summary

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, Library and Archives seeks a Project Archivist to establish baseline administrative, physical, and intellectual control over existing acquisitions as part of a retrospective accessioning project. This includes inventorying recently acquired archival materials and collections in the institutional backlog, as well as creating accession records following industry-standard accessioning guidelines. This position is limited to 19 hours per week and is non-benefits eligible.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts collection surveys for existing acquisitions.
  • Creates accession and resource records within the institution’s collections management system.
  • Performs basic preservation activities including rehousing and minimal physical processing as needed.
  • Makes appraisal recommendations and identifies records series for possible deaccessioning.
  • Contributes to the development of institutional accessioning strategies and procedures.
  • Accessions new acquisitions.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Master's Degree with coursework in Archival Theory and Methodology or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
  • At least one year of previous hands-on experience working with archival collections (including part-time positions, internships, etc.), such as:
    • Familiarity with archival standards and best practices for appraisal, accessioning, and minimal processing.
    • Experience with archival collections management systems such as ArchivesSpace.
    • Knowledge of archival descriptive standards such as DACS, MARC, EAD and use of thesauri and controlled vocabularies.
    • Knowledge of basic preservation standards for archival collections.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to read cursive handwriting.
  • Knowledge of American natural history and/or the history of science.
  • Strong organizational skills, project management skills, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to sit, stoop, and stand for periods of time and lift and move up to 40lbs frequently.

Additional Information

This is a Part-Time casual position classified as Non-Exempt. The offered pay is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
