Job Summary

The Assistant Research Professor will be expected to lead, coordinate, manage, and support several ongoing field studies as well as develop new independent and collaborative research opportunities. Ongoing projects focus on various aspects of the carceral context, including prison conditions, Scandinavian justice systems, legal financial obligations (LFOs), sentencing reform, autism, and housing policy. The Research Assistant Professors will be expected to conduct high-quality quantitative research using administrative and primary data, both independently and under direction, oversee various aspects of sponsored research projects, and contribute to the supervision of other research staff and students. Research Assistant Professors will have a dual affiliation with the Department of Criminology and Justice Studies (College of Arts and Science; CoAS) and the Justice Collaborative research lab (Thomas R. Kline School of Law and CoAS).

This is a grant-funded position and is able to start as soon as a viable candidate is found.

Essential Functions

  • Lead data analyses for reporting and publication.
  • Identify and implement complex analyses of administrative and survey data.
  • Develop new projects and grant proposals, independently and with team members.
  • Supervise junior team members.
  • Manage study data, both paper and electronic.
  • Supervise project coordination, including data collection, meetings, IRB protocols, and training sessions.
  • Communicate process and outcomes findings to academic and non-academic stakeholders.
  • Lead or oversee data coding and management.
  • Write for technical and non-technical audiences, including peer-reviewed publications.
  • Adhere to codes of conduct for research, university activities, and criminal justice agency partners.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or Doctorate degree in Criminology/Criminal Justice or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of post-doctoral work experience.
  • Experience analyzing data and producing reports using R, STATA, or comparable statistical software.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging program evaluation methodologies and quantitative analytic strategies.
  • Demonstrated history with project management and/or fieldwork leadership, including overseeing data collection and management.
  • Ability to work with administrative databases, including development, management, and reporting, such that all data cleaning and analyses are reproducible.
  • Strong record of analysis, research, writing, and publication.
  • Ability to travel across Pennsylvania, including possible multi-day site visits.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with primary data collection, particularly with vulnerable populations.
  • Experience working with law enforcement, legal, justice, and other public agency data.
  • Training or direct experience with quantitative analyses, particularly for randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental designs.
  • Comfortable conducting engaged research with criminal justice agency staff, members of vulnerable populations, and others.
  • Strong organization and attentiveness to detail skills.
  • Familiarity with the structure and operation of the justice and legal system.
  • Valid passport; ability to travel internationally.
