Job Summary
The research staff member will support ongoing projects in Dr. Najafi’s lab focused on the design and characterization of bioinspired materials and biomechanical systems. The position involves both experimental and computational responsibilities.
The successful candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers with expertise in experimental mechanics and computational modeling. This role is critical to advancing the development of novel biomaterials and bioinspired systems for next-generation structural applications.
Essential Functions
- Preparation and processing of biological samples (e.g., bone specimens) for mechanical testing and imaging.
- Image processing and analysis of experimental data (e.g., micro-CT or microscopy data).
- Development of computational models, including finite element (FE) models of biological and bioinspired structures.
- Execution of numerical simulations and design optimization studies for structural and biomechanical applications.
- Integration of experimental observations with computational modeling to advance multiscale material design.
- Documentation, data management, and preparation of research outputs (figures, reports, and manuscripts).
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of a PhD or Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Minimum of 0-3 years of experience.
- Experience with finite element modeling and simulation of structural or biological systems.
- Familiarity with experimental techniques, including sample preparation, imaging (e.g., micro-CT), or mechanical testing.
- Proficiency in programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or C/C++) and data analysis.
- Experience integrating experimental data with computational modeling approaches.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment.
- Eligibility to work in the United States.

Additional Information
This is a Part-Time Per Diem position classified as Non-Exempt. The offered pay is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
