Job Overview
Preceptors are experienced professionals who are knowledgeable and passionate about their specialty and have a desire to teach. A highly qualified preceptor is both confident and competent and provides an environment that fosters independence. Further, the preceptor is a professional role model who actively supports and engages in professional and scholarly activities.
Essential Duties
- Foster a mutually respectful and collaborative learning environment
- Orient students to clinical setting, including policies and procedures
- Provide supervision and mentoring to students throughout the clinical rotation
- Frequent communication with students to facilitate learning
- Encourage students to take advantage of available facility resources
- Guide students’ progression to meet the needs and demands of the clinical site
- Act as a teacher/mentor/coach/role model/team member
- Assist the student in meeting course objectives and individual learning needs
- Review and provide ongoing constructive feedback
- Communicate with Program faculty throughout the clinical rotation concerning students’ progress and notify of any immediate concerns
- Complete a final evaluation of the students’ performance
- Submit current CV and signed clinical paperwork
Required Qualifications
- Physicians: Board certified in the area of instruction with a minimum of one year of experience in the clinical specialty
- Physician Assistants/Associates: PANCE certification with a minimum of one year of experience in the clinical specialty
- Licensed in the state in which they practice
Clinical Hours
- 30-50 hours per week expected
- Ten five-week rotations in: Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Women’s Health, Surgery, Family Medicine, Behavioral Medicine, and other Elective specialties.
