The Assistant Vice President of Development is a member of the Drexel University Institutional Advancement (IA) team assigned to develop philanthropic resources for St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children (SCHC). This position will play a lead role in annual, events, major, principal, corporate, and planned gift fundraising. This position will also serve as the primary IA liaison to the CEO and Pediatrician-in-Chief, SCHC. The individual will be a member of the senior management team and serve as a “Unit Leader” in Drexel University Institutional Advancement.
- Secures annual, major, principal, and planned gifts and develops future major donors by pursuing the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of private support from external parties, including individuals, corporations, and foundations
- Understands, appreciates, and abides by best practices related to grateful patient fundraising
- Has a special understanding of work related to a predominantly Medicare/Medicaid patient population
- Builds a culture of philanthropy at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.
- Spends significant time educating internal and external constituents on best
- Willing and able to delicately handle memorial gifts from patient families, as well as an understanding on how to facilitate and execute memorial gifts through the formation of gift funds, giving links, and proper stewardship techniques
- Oversees all aspects of the operations and multi-channel annual giving solicitation efforts for SCHC
- Interacts and coordinates regularly with the Drexel Fund, Associate Director of Annual Giving (DUCOM), IA Marketing and Communications, and the Vice President, Institutional Advancement on outreach, planned solicitations, and stewardship approaches
- 5Willing and able to delicately handle memorial gifts from patient families, as well as an understanding on how to facilitate and execute memorial gifts through the formation of gift funds, giving links, and proper stewardship techniques
- Builds and manages a portfolio of 50 or more prospects who are believed capable of making commitments of $25,000 or more, based on giving patterns, prospect research, and other indicators
- This portfolio will evolve steadily as prospects/suspects are brought to closure or dropped from the portfolio for lack of capacity or inclination
- Maintains an active schedule of face-to-face meetings with major gift prospects, averaging 5 such meetings per month
- Actively seeks out opportunities to do site visits with prospects at the Hospital
- Serves as advisor to the CEO and Pediatrician-in-Chief on fundraising matters and coordinates development activities within SCHC and Drexel Institutional Advancement
- Meets regularly with the CEO, Pediatrician-in-Chief, Chief Financial Officer, and Vice President on fundraising matters
- Will build and manage a team of fundraising professionals, potentially including annual and events, planned giving, major gifts, and support staff
- Works closely with the Foundation and Corporate Relations team at Drexel University, specifically within the College of Medicine as SCHC is the Department of Pediatrics for DUCOM
- Meets regularly to strategize on approaches to foundations and companies regarding philanthropic investment in SCHC
- Inventories volunteer management at the Hospital and seeks to create a partnership with all Hospital colleagues who are engaging volunteers
- Develops a strategy for volunteerism at the Hospital.
- Explores opportunities to integrate giving societies, with consideration of a Physician Giving Society, Loyal Donor Society, $1M Club, Planned Giving Society
- Collaborates closely with any Hospital co-owners as appropriate and necessary on fundraising strategies, coordination, stewardship, and priorities
- Involves communication with fundraising partners of external organizations
- Understands the intricacies of working with a separate Foundation is generating support for St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, including developing a relationship with the St Christopher’s Foundation for Children and other non-profits with working relationships with the SCHC
- Concentrates on identifying, cultivating, and soliciting planned giving donors. Works closely with the Vice President, Institutional Advancement, Hospital leadership, and the Drexel Planned Giving Office to determine appropriate recognition and stewardship strategies for planned giving donors to St. Christopher’s
- Collaborates with the Vice President, Institutional Advancement, and other IA colleagues in the analysis formation and implementation of fundraising plans, policies and procedures as they pertain to the development program for the Hospital
- Serves as a strong advocate for prospect management and goals of the unit with IA colleagues, reinforcing the vision and direction of the Vice President, Institutional Advancement
- Uses the database and analytical skills to determine opportunities to engage high-net worth prospects for a strategic, targeted approach
- Stewards donors through ongoing communications, recognition activities, invitations to key events, and interaction with beneficiaries of their support
- Collaborates with The Drexel Fund, who leads the annual giving fundraising efforts for Drexel University, as appropriate and necessary
- Promotes University priorities and image to constituents. Serves as front line staff to promote campus goals and objectives. Maintains current knowledge of university-wide institutional priorities
- As appropriate, and with the knowledge of the Vice President, Institutional Advancement, qualifies, cultivates and solicits prospects on behalf of other campus units, most likely for the College of Medicine
- Follows Institutional Advancement procedures regarding prospect management and documenting contacts.
- Responsible for oversight and submission of all relative fundraising reports, statistics, projections, and publications
- Other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Seven or more years of fundraising experience in a development program, preferably with a healthcare or educational institution. Annual giving and events-based fundraising a plus.
- Demonstrated progress in working on major gifts
- Demonstrated experience working with volunteers
- Familiarity with planned giving concepts
- Ability and willingness to travel required
- Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends required
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills required
- Excellent administrative skills required.
- Willingness to work at the Hospital on-site regularly
- Knowledge of prospect management systems preferred
- Knowledge of database fundraising software CS Advance and Reeher preferred
