Job Summary

A Standardized Patient Model (SPM) is a person who volunteers as a patient model in a realistic and repeatable manner. This involves acting out specific behaviors, symptoms, and problems related to an orthotic and/or prosthetic patient case. SPMs participate in patient interviews, physical examinations, written and verbal communication, patient impression, patient fittings, and student patient education.

SPMs are valuable assets to clinical and non-clinical education, serving as patients, guides/teachers, and occasionally evaluators. By providing a safe, controlled, and realistic environment for student learners to practice communication and clinical skills, SPMs contribute to the development of future orthotic and prosthetic professionals.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain appropriate posture and positioning to accurately represent various clinical scenarios, including standing, sitting, lying down, and functional positions.
  • Maintain a professional and cooperative demeanor during training sessions.
  • Support the teaching of biomechanics, gait analysis, and rehabilitation strategies by providing a realistic platform for observation and analysis.
  • Open to the fitting, adjustment, and evaluation of orthotic and/or prosthetic devices, enabling students to practice patient assessment, device selection, device fitting, and device customization.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to maintain appropriate positioning and posture for extended periods of time.
  • Assume various postures and positions, including standing, sitting, lying down, kneeling, and other functional stances, to support different clinical assessments and training scenarios.
  • Having the identified orthotic and/or prosthetic
  • No visible wounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to standardized patient protocols.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to different patient scenarios.

Additional Information

This is a part-time per-diem position classified as non-exempt.  The pay offered is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
