Job Summary

Under the division of University Marketing & Communications, Marketing Communications creates proactive, innovative, and comprehensive marketing, communications and branding strategies that highlight Drexel’s academic strengths and research, while emphasizing the value and potential of the experiential education model. Marketing Communications works closely with colleges, schools, academic and administrative staff throughout the University to create comprehensive marketing and communications strategies that serve the University’s overarching branding, recruitment and retention goals to meet or exceed the enrollment and revenue objectives. Marketing Communications defines, protects, and disseminates the Drexel University brand while clearly illustrating its unique value proposition.

The Senior Copywriter is a leadership role within the Marketing Communications team at Drexel University. The role will be responsible for implementing and maintaining marketing and creative strategies, overall messaging, tone and voice for Drexel's Enrollment Management, Student Success, and will manage and protect the overall Drexel University brand. The position will be responsible for writing and editing a wide range and heavy volume of recruitment materials, while ensuring that all materials are on strategy. This position will work to ensure that the highest quality of creative is produced and managed for all internal and external outputs, including (but not limited to): short- and long-form print, email, brochures, video scripts, in-home mailing materials, outdoor marketing, digital and social media.

The Senior Copywriter will be a member of a high-energy creative team and will interact with students, faculty, administrators, as well as other communication team members, across the University. The Senior Copywriter will serve as a mentor to Junior Copywriters and will report directly to the Editorial Creative Director. The Senior Copywriter will also assist in the coordination of collaborations with external Proofreaders and Video & Interactive vendors, along with serving as a consultant to other areas of the University and providing support where needed. 

Essential Functions

  • Lead in the development of marketing and creative strategies, while maintaining (and protecting) consistent messaging and voice/tone of the Drexel University Brand.
  • Develop and maintain a significant volume of complex, multi-channel recruitment-related marketing materials including print, mail, digital, outdoor, video and social for Enrollment Management & Student Success, along with other General University material as needed.
  • Collaborate with internal creative teams as well as other cross-university communications groups to brainstorm creative ideas and concepts.
  • Serve as the editorial knowledge base for programs and University functions and act as the gatekeeper for all editorial assignments. Ensure that each project has the latest content templates and meets editorial style guides. Senior Copywriter is responsible for overall quality of work.
  • Present creative and manage relationships with internal and external colleagues and vendors. Be accountable for meeting deadlines, and perform proper delegation of a large volume of assignments/tasks.
  • Support Senior Leadership with editorial support for internal and external leadership and organizational communications.
  • Collaborate with interactive team to concept/compose/edit/review online/digital marketing efforts through content management systems as well as other online editing programs such as Dreamweaver.
  • Support, train, and collaborate with writers on offline/online development, and assist in coordination with vendors such as proofreaders, video and interactive content developers, others.
  • Research the latest trends in marketing, campaign testing techniques, developments in the Higher Education field, and maintain ownership of the EMSS editorial style guide and integration of the University style guide.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • 2 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some published or produced work.
  • Full understanding of editorial style guides, specifically Chicago and AP Style.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, InDesign.
  • Some weekend work.
  • Higher Education experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with SiteCore or Content Management Systems.
  • Experience with Dreamweaver.
  • Experience with HTML.

Additional Information

This position is classified as exempt, grade K. Compensation for this grade ranges from $54,630 to $81,940 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
