Job Summary

Reporting to an Associate Director, the Student Billing Specialist is responsible for the posting of all payments received by the Bursar’s Office. Additionally, the Student Billing Specialist will provide guidance related to student billing including billing rates, discounts, balances, third party contract billing, employee reimbursement and student refunds. 

The Student Billing Specialist must exhibit a strong attention to detail in their work and be able to self-manage projects in an accurate and timely manner. They must possess excellent communication skills so they can effectively communicate with many different audiences. The Student Billing Specialist must be enthusiastic, people-oriented, and enjoy working with students and their families. This position requires the ability to collaborate with peers and supervisors to achieve overall EMSS Divisional goals. The successful candidate should have exceptional organizational skills, be willing to work as part of a team in a fast-paced, goal- driven environment, and maintain an overall positive attitude.

Essential Functions

  • Learn and accurately execute university, state, and federal policies and procedures associated with bursar/student account functions.
  • Post student cash and check payments received in-person or via U.S. mail.
  • Process University lockbox payments, including upload of file from bank and reviewing auditing accuracy of payments posted to student accounts.
  • Accept and post University departmental deposits.
  • Maintain housing deposit refunds and forfeitures.
  • Scan and transmit daily departmental deposit back-up documents to General Accounting.
  • Scan daily student check payments for electronic transfer to designated Bank.
  • Daily balancing and settlement of cash drawer and cashier sessions.
  • Support customer service staff and students/families in the analysis of accounts to ensure accuracy and understanding of information.
  • Audit student accounts through reporting tools.
  • Provide customer service and respond to inquiries regarding student billing to internal and external clients via multiple modes of communication.
  • Understand and adhere to Drexel University’s compliance standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of one of the following:
    • Bachelor's degree,
    • Associate’s Degree and 4 years of experience,
    • High School Diploma/GED and 8 years of experience.

  • Experience working in a cash-handling role.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, specifically Outlook and Excel.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends as needed/during peak times.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Working knowledge of the following Bursar/Student Account systems -- Banner/Ellucian SIS, Touch Net.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate university, state and federal policies.
  • Experience working with college students and families.

This position is classified as Non-Exempt, grade I. Compensation for this grade ranges from $19.69 to $29.54 per hour. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
